Research type: Sourced shortcut guide
Method: Current Apple screenshot and keyboard-shortcut documentation retrieved September 20, 2026. No Mac capture or shortcut was executed; format and app limits are labeled as documentation, not local observations.

Apple gives you three useful layers of screen capture: the direct keyboard shortcuts, the Screenshot toolbar, and the Clipboard modifier. Use the smallest one that matches what you need.

## The core shortcuts

| Shortcut | What it captures | Default result |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Shift-Command-3 | The entire screen | A saved screenshot |
| Shift-Command-4 | A rectangular selection | A saved screenshot |
| Shift-Command-4, then Space | A window or menu | A saved screenshot |
| Shift-Command-5 | The Screenshot toolbar | Capture or recording controls |
| Control plus one of the capture shortcuts | The same capture, sent to the Clipboard | Clipboard output |

Apple says shortcut captures are saved to the Desktop by default. The Screenshot app can use another location.

## Capture a selected area

Press Shift-Command-4. When the pointer becomes a crosshair, drag across the area you want and release.

During the selection:

- Press Escape to cancel.
- Hold Space while dragging to move the selection without changing its size.
- If the first rectangle is wrong, keep holding Space and reposition it before releasing.

This is the useful default for an error message, one part of a window, or a code block.

## Capture a window or menu

Open the window or menu first. Press Shift-Command-4, press Space, then move the camera pointer over the target and click.

To leave the window shadow out, hold Option while you click. Apple also documents menu capture. For menu items, open the menu, press Shift-Command-4, and drag over the items you want to include.

A window capture is still subject to the app being captured. Apple notes that some apps, including Apple TV, may not allow screenshots of their windows.

## Send the capture to the Clipboard

Hold Control while pressing the shortcut. For example:

- Control-Shift-Command-3 copies the full screen.
- Control-Shift-Command-4 copies a selected area.
- Control-Shift-Command-4, then Space copies a window or menu.

Paste with Command-V. This is useful when the next step is a message, document, issue, or chat and you do not need a file on disk.

## Open the Screenshot toolbar

Press Shift-Command-5. The toolbar includes still-image capture and screen-recording controls. Its Options menu can expose:

- a save location;
- a timer;
- the floating thumbnail;
- the mouse pointer; and
- the capture format on supported Macs using macOS Tahoe 26 or later.

On those supported Tahoe Macs, Apple describes SDR (Most Compatible) as PNG and HDR as HEIF. Do not assume every capture is PNG if HDR is selected.

The toolbar also includes a “Remember Last Selection” option in the current Mac user guide. That is useful for repeating the same area, but the saved rectangle is a toolbar option rather than a separate keyboard shortcut.

## Change or inspect a shortcut

If a shortcut does nothing, open Apple menu > System Settings > Keyboard > Keyboard Shortcuts > Screenshots. Check that the intended action is enabled and that its key combination has not been changed.

This is also where you can customize the screenshot shortcuts. A third-party capture app can have its own global shortcuts; inspect that app separately if only one combination conflicts.
