Research type: Sourced diagnostic guide
Method: Apple screenshot, keyboard-shortcut, and protected-recording documentation retrieved September 20, 2026. No local Mac troubleshooting test was performed; the sequence separates documented checks from hypotheses about a particular machine.

Start with the least invasive checks. The same symptom can mean a disabled shortcut, a changed save destination, a third-party conflict, or an app that does not allow capture.

## 1. Try the Screenshot toolbar

Press Shift-Command-5.

- If the toolbar opens, use it to capture the whole screen or a selected portion.
- Open Options and check Save to.
- Check that Show Floating Thumbnail is configured the way you expect.

If the toolbar works but a direct shortcut does not, check the shortcut assignment and any third-party conflicts.

## 2. Check the shortcut assignment

Open Apple menu > System Settings > Keyboard > Keyboard Shortcuts > Screenshots. Confirm that the action you want is enabled and that its key combination has not been changed.

If you use a third-party screenshot or keyboard utility, inspect its global shortcuts. Two apps can compete for the same key combination.

## 3. Check where the file went

Shortcut captures normally save to the Desktop, but Screenshot > Options can point them somewhere else. If Control was held during the shortcut, the image went to the Clipboard instead of becoming a file.

Search Finder for “Screen Shot” and sort by Date Modified. If the floating thumbnail is visible, it can be dragged into a Finder window or document.

## 4. Separate the built-in tool from a third-party app

Apple’s current privacy setting for apps and websites that use the protected capture capability is System Settings > Privacy & Security > Screen & System Audio Recording. Check the exact third-party app there, then quit and reopen it.

This permission step is for the app that is asking to capture. Do not assume that granting a third-party app permission explains every failure in Apple’s built-in Screenshot workflow.

## 5. Test a normal window

If the screenshot is black or blank only for one app, test Finder or a normal document window. Apple notes that some apps may not allow screenshots of their windows. Treat that as an app or content restriction rather than proof that the shortcut is broken.

## 6. Restart only after the simple checks

If the toolbar and shortcuts still fail after the settings checks, save your work and restart the Mac. If the issue remains, update macOS and consult Apple Support with the macOS version, the exact shortcut, and whether the toolbar works.

Avoid jumping straight to privacy-database resets, NVRAM instructions, or reinstalling macOS. Those steps have wider effects and are not established by Apple’s screenshot documentation as routine fixes.
