# Mac Screenshot Shortcut Not Working? 8 Fixes for Cmd+Shift+4 (2026)

**July 2, 2026 · LazyScreenshots Team**

If `Cmd+Shift+4` does not work on your Mac, the most common cause is that another application has claimed the shortcut. CleanShot X, Monosnap, and Droplr can reassign it. macOS updates can also reset keyboard shortcut settings; this has been reported after upgrades to Sequoia and Tahoe.

Work through the fixes below in order, starting with the most likely solution.

## Quick reference: Mac screenshot shortcuts

| Shortcut | What it does |
|---|---|
| `Cmd+Shift+3` | Captures the entire screen |
| `Cmd+Shift+4` | Captures a selected area with a crosshair cursor |
| `Cmd+Shift+4`, then `Space` | Captures a specific window |
| `Cmd+Shift+5` | Opens the Screenshot toolbar for area capture, window capture, and recording |
| `Cmd+Shift+6` | Captures the Touch Bar; Touch Bar Macs only |

If these shortcuts produce neither a crosshair cursor nor a screenshot file, continue with the fixes.

## Fix 1: Reset screenshot keyboard shortcuts in System Settings

macOS updates and third-party applications can disable or reassign screenshot shortcuts.

1. Open **System Settings > Keyboard > Keyboard Shortcuts**.
2. Select **Screenshots** in the left sidebar.
3. Confirm that every screenshot option has a checkmark. Enable any unchecked options.
4. Click **Restore Defaults** at the bottom to restore the factory assignments.
5. Try `Cmd+Shift+4` again. If the crosshair appears and you can drag to capture, the problem is resolved.

## Fix 2: Check for third-party app conflicts

When another application claims the shortcut, macOS displays a yellow warning badge beside the conflicting shortcut in the **Screenshots** section of Keyboard Shortcuts settings.

Common applications that may reassign `Cmd+Shift+4` include:

- **CleanShot X** — reassigns all screenshot shortcuts by default during setup.
- **Monosnap** — can claim region-capture shortcuts.
- **Droplr** — uses similar shortcuts for its capture tool.
- **Skitch** — older versions override macOS screenshot shortcuts.

To test for a conflict, quit the suspected application. Check the menu bar for its icon, right-click it, and choose **Quit**. Try the shortcut again. If it works, change the shortcut in that application’s settings or uninstall the application.

## Fix 3: Fix your keyboard input source

Non-English layouts such as AZERTY, QWERTZ, and Dvorak can remap number keys and interfere with shortcuts that depend on key positions. This may happen after switching layouts or adding an input source.

1. Open **System Settings > Keyboard > Input Sources**. On some macOS versions, click **Edit** next to Input Sources.
2. If you have multiple input sources, place **English** or your primary layout at the top.
3. Use the menu bar input menu to switch to the English input source, then test the shortcut again.

## Fix 4: Restart your Mac

Restarting can clear temporary problems in `screencaptureui` and `WindowServer`, the processes involved in screenshots. Choose **Apple menu > Restart**, then test the shortcut after the Mac boots.

As an alternative, open Terminal and run:

```bash
killall screencaptureui
```

A full restart is more reliable because it also resets `WindowServer`.

## Fix 5: Check available disk space

macOS normally saves screenshots as files on the Desktop. If the startup disk is nearly full, macOS may fail silently: no error message, crosshair, or screenshot file appears.

1. Choose **Apple menu > About This Mac > Storage**. On newer macOS versions, use **More Info > Storage Settings**.
2. If less than **1 GB** is available, free space by emptying Trash, deleting old downloads, or moving files to an external drive.
3. Test the shortcut again.

## Fix 6: Delete corrupted screenshot preferences

Screenshot settings such as save location, file format, and timer are stored in a preferences file. If it is corrupted, moving it aside lets macOS generate a fresh file with default settings.

1. Open Finder and press `Cmd+Shift+G`.
2. Enter `~/Library/Preferences/` and press Enter.
3. Find `com.apple.screencapture.plist`.
4. Move the file to your Desktop rather than deleting it immediately, so you can restore it if needed.
5. Restart your Mac.

macOS should create a new `com.apple.screencapture.plist` after restarting. Test `Cmd+Shift+4`. If it works, delete the old file from your Desktop.

## Fix 7: Boot into Safe Mode

Safe Mode disables third-party login items, extensions, and non-essential system services. If screenshots work in Safe Mode but not during a normal startup, a login item or extension may be responsible.

### Apple Silicon Macs: M1, M2, M3, and M4

1. Shut down your Mac.
2. Press and hold the power button until **Loading startup options** appears.
3. Select your startup disk, hold **Shift**, and click **Continue in Safe Mode**.

### Intel Macs

1. Shut down your Mac.
2. Turn it on and immediately hold **Shift** during startup.
3. Release **Shift** when the login window appears.

If screenshots work in Safe Mode, restart normally. Then disable login items one at a time in **System Settings > General > Login Items & Extensions** to identify the cause.

## Fix 8: Reset NVRAM on Intel Macs

NVRAM stores some system settings across restarts. Resetting it may resolve persistent keyboard shortcut problems on Intel Macs. Apple Silicon Macs reset NVRAM automatically on every restart, so this step applies only to Intel models.

1. Shut down your Mac.
2. Turn it on and immediately hold `Cmd+Option+P+R`.
3. Continue holding the keys for about **20 seconds**. Your Mac may restart during the process.
4. Release the keys and let the Mac start normally.
5. Return to Fix 1 and confirm that the screenshot shortcuts remain enabled.

## Still not working? Use an alternative screenshot method

While investigating the issue, you can use either of these workarounds:

- Open the **Screenshot** app directly from **Applications > Utilities > Screenshot**, or search for “Screenshot” in Spotlight with `Cmd+Space`. It uses the same capture engine without relying on keyboard shortcuts.
- Use [LazyScreenshots](https://www.lazyscreenshots.com/). We are a third-party Mac screenshot tool priced at **$29 one-time**. We use our own capture engine and keyboard shortcuts, independent of macOS’s built-in screenshot system. We also auto-paste captures into Claude, Cursor, and ChatGPT, which is useful when working with AI coding assistants.

We use our own keyboard shortcuts, so LazyScreenshots can continue working when macOS screenshot shortcuts fail. We offer one-keystroke capture with auto-paste into AI coding tools for **$29 once**.
