# How to Crop a Screenshot on Mac: 5 Quick Methods

**March 26, 2026 · LazyScreenshots Team**

We explain five ways to crop Mac screenshots before or after capture. Cropping reduces file size, focuses attention, and improves bug reports, messages, and AI prompts.

## Method 1: Capture only what you need with Cmd+Shift+4

Press **Cmd+Shift+4**, then click and drag the exact region. Release to capture only that selection.

- Hold **Space** while dragging to reposition the selection without changing its size.
- Hold **Shift** while dragging to lock one dimension.
- For a window, press **Cmd+Shift+4**, then **Space**. Click the window to capture it with its shadow; hold **Option** while clicking to remove the shadow.

**Best for:** capturing a known region with no post-processing.

## Method 2: Crop with the floating thumbnail

On macOS Mojave or later, click the screenshot thumbnail in the bottom-right within about **five seconds** to open Markup. Select the crop icon, drag the frame edges, and click **Done**. The cropped image replaces the original. If the thumbnail disappears, use Preview.

**Best for:** quick post-capture crops.

## Method 3: Crop in Preview

Open the image in Preview, select the Rectangular Selection tool, draw the area to keep, and choose **Tools > Crop** or press **Cmd+K**. Preview can also resize through **Tools > Adjust Size**. Uncheck **Resample image** to change resolution without scaling; leave it checked to set exact width and height. Use **Cmd+Z** to undo.

**Best for:** pixel-level cropping, exact dimensions, or older saved screenshots.

## Method 4: Crop in Photos

Open the screenshot in Photos, choose **Edit > Crop**, and drag the edges. Photos provides preset ratios including **16:9**, **4:3**, and square, plus landscape/portrait orientation. Edits are non-destructive; choose **Edit > Revert to Original** to restore the uncropped image.

**Best for:** standard aspect ratios, non-destructive edits, and screenshots already in Photos.

## Method 5: Crop and annotate with a dedicated screenshot tool

A dedicated tool combines capture, crop, annotation, and pasting without saving a file or switching applications. We let you capture, crop, annotate, and auto-paste into Claude, Cursor, or ChatGPT with one keyboard shortcut. Crop handles let you adjust the frame after capture without losing arrows or highlights.

**Best for:** developers and technical writers who crop and annotate repeatedly.

## Comparison

| Method | When to crop | Exact pixel control | Annotations | Speed |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cmd+Shift+4 | Before capture | No | No | Fastest |
| Floating thumbnail | Immediately after | No | Basic (Markup) | Fast |
| Preview | Any time | Yes | Basic (Markup) | Moderate |
| Photos | Any time | Aspect ratios | No | Moderate |
| LazyScreenshots | During capture | Yes | Full (arrows, boxes, text) | Fastest |

## Pro tips

- Capture at the right size from the start; for example, use Cmd+Shift+4 while watching the pixel dimensions for a desired 680px blog width.
- Use consistent aspect ratios with Photos presets or Preview’s Adjust Size.
- Retina Macs capture at 2×: a 400px on-screen region produces an 800px image. Resize afterward if the destination expects 1× web dimensions.
- Crop before annotating unless your tool supports non-destructive layers, so arrows and highlights are not cut off.

We capture, crop, annotate, and auto-paste screenshots into Claude, Cursor, and ChatGPT with one shortcut. **$29 one-time.**
