# How to Turn Off the Screenshot Floating Thumbnail on Mac

**May 9, 2026 · LazyScreenshots Team**

We show how to remove the macOS screenshot preview that appears in the lower-right corner, why it can interfere with rapid captures and recordings, and how to restore or inspect the setting.

## What the floating thumbnail does

Since macOS Mojave, screenshots show a thumbnail in the bottom-right corner for about **five seconds** before the file is saved. It provides quick Markup and drag-and-drop, but it can:

- Delay file saving until it disappears.
- Be captured in a subsequent screenshot.
- Overlap app controls and become a misclick target.

## Method 1: Screenshot toolbar

1. Press `Cmd+Shift+5`.
2. Click **Options**.
3. Uncheck **Show Floating Thumbnail**.
4. Press **Escape** or click away.

Future captures with `Cmd+Shift+3`, `Cmd+Shift+4`, and `Cmd+Shift+5` skip the thumbnail and save directly to the Desktop or configured location.

### What you lose

- **Quick Markup:** Open the saved file in Preview or another editor instead.
- **Drag-and-drop:** Drag the saved file from Finder rather than the thumbnail.

## Method 2: Terminal

```bash
# Disable the floating thumbnail
defaults write com.apple.screencapture show-thumbnail -bool false
killall SystemUIServer
```

`killall SystemUIServer` applies the change immediately.

To re-enable it:

```bash
# Re-enable the floating thumbnail
defaults write com.apple.screencapture show-thumbnail -bool true
killall SystemUIServer
```

To restore the macOS default:

```bash
defaults delete com.apple.screencapture show-thumbnail
killall SystemUIServer
```

To inspect the setting:

```bash
defaults read com.apple.screencapture show-thumbnail
```

The command returns `0` when disabled and `1` when enabled. If the key does not exist, macOS uses the enabled default.

We save instantly to disk without a floating-thumbnail delay. [Try LazyScreenshots Free](https://www.lazyscreenshots.com/)

## Method 3: Third-party screenshot tools

| App | Shows floating thumbnail? | Own preview? |
| --- | --- | --- |
| LazyScreenshots | No | Instant annotation editor |
| CleanShot X | No | Own overlay with quick actions |
| Shottr | No | Own editor window |
| Snagit | No | Opens in Snagit Editor |
| Xnapper | No | Own beautifier window |

These tools intercept the shortcut before the built-in Screenshot app, so there is no thumbnail, shutter sound, or five-second delay.

## Screen recordings

The thumbnail can appear in a recording and create a visual interruption. Disable it before recording tutorials, demos, or bug reports. The recording function at `Cmd+Shift+5 > Record` is separate; disabling the thumbnail does not change recording behavior.

## macOS Tahoe behavior

macOS Tahoe (2025) changed how some screenshot preferences are stored. After upgrading from Sonoma or Sequoia, the setting may reset because Tahoe migrates preferences and some `defaults write` customizations do not carry over. The **Cmd+Shift+5 > Options** method is the most reliable post-upgrade fix. Reapply it if updates cause the setting to revert.

## Rapid screenshot batches

With the thumbnail enabled, a second screenshot taken within five seconds can capture the first thumbnail, and a third can capture the second. With it disabled, each screenshot saves immediately and cleanly; the guide describes taking **10 screenshots in 10 seconds** without cross-contamination.

## Quick reference

| Method | Difficulty | Persists after restart? | Persists after macOS update? |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Cmd+Shift+5 > Options | Easy | Yes | Usually |
| Terminal `defaults write` | Medium | Yes | Sometimes resets |
| Third-party screenshot tool | Easy | Yes | Yes, independently of macOS |
