# How to Disable the Screenshot Sound on Mac

**May 9, 2026 · LazyScreenshots Team**

macOS plays a camera-shutter sound when you capture the full screen with `Cmd+Shift+3` or select an area with `Cmd+Shift+4`. macOS does not provide a dedicated screenshot-sound checkbox: the shutter sound is grouped with user-interface sounds. We provide five ways to capture silently.

## Method 1: Mute your Mac before capturing

1. Press **F10** or the mute button to silence your Mac.
2. Capture with `Cmd+Shift+3` or `Cmd+Shift+4`.
3. Press **F10** again to unmute.

This works immediately and requires no configuration, but muting also prevents notifications, music, and alerts from playing until you unmute.

### Use volume-down instead

Press **F11** repeatedly until the volume indicator shows the muted speaker icon. The screenshot sound plays only when system volume is above zero. Hold **Option+Shift** while pressing a volume key to adjust in quarter-increments.

## Method 2: Disable UI sound effects in System Settings

1. Open **System Settings** (or **System Preferences** on older macOS).
2. Click **Sound**.
3. In **Sound Effects**, uncheck **Play user interface sound effects**.

This silences the screenshot shutter and other interface sounds. Alert dialogs remain visible, but do not play audio cues. App notification sounds from Messages, Slack, and Calendar use a separate setting and are not affected.

### What this also silences

- Trash-emptying sound
- The “move to folder” sound when dragging files
- Volume-adjustment click
- Error-alert beeps

## Method 3: Use Terminal’s `screencapture -x` flag

The `-x` flag suppresses sound for an individual capture without changing system settings:

```bash
# Silent full-screen screenshot
screencapture -x ~/Desktop/screenshot.png
# Silent interactive region selection
screencapture -ix ~/Desktop/screenshot.png
# Silent capture to clipboard (no file saved)
screencapture -xc
```

| Flag combination | Behavior |
| --- | --- |
| `-x` | Silent full-screen capture to file |
| `-ix` | Silent interactive region/window selection |
| `-xc` | Silent capture to clipboard |
| `-ixc` | Silent interactive selection to clipboard |
| `-xw` | Silent window capture |

### Create a keyboard shortcut for silent screenshots

1. Open **Automator** and create a **Quick Action**.
2. Add a **Run Shell Script** action.
3. Enter `screencapture -ixc`.
4. Save it with a name such as **Silent Screenshot**.
5. Open **System Settings > Keyboard > Keyboard Shortcuts > Services**.
6. Find the Quick Action and assign a shortcut, such as `Ctrl+Shift+4`.

The shortcut captures silently without changing system-wide sound settings.

LazyScreenshots captures silently by default, with no shutter sound or configuration. We also provide capture, annotation, and sharing in one workflow.

## Method 4: Use a macOS Shortcut

The Shortcuts app is built into macOS Monterey and later and can create a one-tap silent workflow:

1. Open **Shortcuts**.
2. Click **+** to create a shortcut.
3. Add **Take Screenshot**.
4. Choose **Interactive** for region selection or **Full Screen**.
5. Add **Save File** and choose the destination.
6. Name the shortcut, such as **Silent Screenshot**.
7. Assign a keyboard shortcut in the shortcut’s settings.

The **Take Screenshot** action captures silently. You can add processing steps such as resizing, converting to JPG, or copying to the clipboard.

## Method 5: Use a third-party screenshot tool

Third-party Mac screenshot apps generally use their own sound settings, separate from macOS.

| App | Silent by default? | Sound toggle? |
| --- | --- | --- |
| LazyScreenshots | Yes | Yes |
| CleanShot X | No | Yes, in preferences |
| Shottr | Yes | N/A |
| Snagit | No | Yes, in preferences |
| Xnapper | Yes | N/A |

Replacing the built-in shortcuts with a third-party tool prevents the macOS shutter sound and can add annotation, cloud sharing, and file-management features.

## Quick reference

| Situation | Best method | Tradeoff |
| --- | --- | --- |
| One-off silent screenshot | Mute key, F10 | You must remember to unmute |
| Always silent without other sound changes | Terminal `-x` or a Shortcut | Requires custom shortcut setup |
| You do not need UI sounds | System Settings toggle | Loses all UI sound effects |
| Frequent screenshots with full control | Third-party app | May cost money |

## Mute the sound during screen recordings

If system audio is recorded, the shutter sound can appear in the recording.

- **System audio:** Mute before capturing or use Terminal `-x`.
- **Microphone only:** The shutter still plays through the speakers, but normally does not enter the recording unless the microphone picks it up.
- **System audio and microphone:** Use a silent third-party tool or disable UI sounds before recording.

## Does the setting persist after macOS updates?

The System Settings toggle survives minor macOS updates and restarts because it is stored in user preferences. Automator actions and Shortcuts also persist because they are saved in the user account. A major upgrade, such as Sonoma to Tahoe, can reset sound preferences; after a major upgrade, check **System Settings > Sound** and confirm that UI sound effects remain off.
