# Print Screen on Mac: The Complete Guide for Windows Switchers

**April 26, 2026 · LazyScreenshots Team**

We explain how Mac screenshot shortcuts correspond to Windows Print Screen, how to copy captures to the clipboard, how to remap keys, where screenshots are saved, and how LazyScreenshots simplifies capture and delivery.

## The quick answer

Mac keyboards do not have a Print Screen key. For a full-screen capture, press **Cmd+Shift+3**. macOS saves the capture as a file on the Desktop rather than copying it to the clipboard.

To reproduce Windows Print Screen's full-screen-to-clipboard behavior, press **Cmd+Control+Shift+3**, then paste with **Cmd+V**.

## Every Windows shortcut mapped to Mac

| Windows shortcut | What it does | Mac equivalent |
|---|---|---|
| Print Screen | Full screen to clipboard | **Cmd+Ctrl+Shift+3** |
| Alt+Print Screen | Active window to clipboard | **Cmd+Ctrl+Shift+4**, then **Space**, then click the window |
| Win+Print Screen | Full screen to file | **Cmd+Shift+3** |
| Win+Shift+S | Snip & Sketch region selection | **Cmd+Shift+4** |
| Snipping Tool | Screenshot toolbar | **Cmd+Shift+5** |
| Win+G (Game Bar) | Game/app recording | **Cmd+Shift+5**, then **Record** |

## Full-screen capture: Print Screen vs. Cmd+Shift+3

Windows **Print Screen** copies the entire screen to the clipboard without saving a file. On Mac, **Cmd+Shift+3** saves the full screen as a PNG on the Desktop and displays a small thumbnail in the bottom-right corner.

Use **Cmd+Control+Shift+3** to capture the full screen to the clipboard without saving a file. Paste it with **Cmd+V**.

With multiple monitors, both methods capture all displays. Windows produces one combined image. Mac **Cmd+Shift+3** creates one file per display, while the clipboard shortcut combines the displays into one image.

## Region capture: Win+Shift+S vs. Cmd+Shift+4

Windows **Win+Shift+S** dims the screen, lets you drag a rectangle, and copies the region to the clipboard.

On Mac, press **Cmd+Shift+4**, drag with the crosshair to select a rectangle, and macOS saves the result as a file. Add **Control**—**Cmd+Control+Shift+4**—to copy the selected region to the clipboard instead. macOS shows pixel dimensions next to the cursor while you drag; Windows does not.

## Window capture: Alt+Print Screen vs. Cmd+Shift+4+Space

Windows **Alt+Print Screen** copies the active window to the clipboard in one step.

On Mac:

1. Press **Cmd+Shift+4**.
2. Press **Space**. The cursor becomes a camera.
3. Hover over any window and click.

The capture includes the window's drop shadow on a transparent background. Hold **Option** while clicking to omit the shadow. To copy rather than save, begin with **Cmd+Control+Shift+4**, then press **Space** and click.

Mac lets you hover over and capture any window, not only the foreground window. Windows **Alt+Print Screen** captures the focused window.

## Snipping Tool vs. Cmd+Shift+5

**Cmd+Shift+5** opens a floating toolbar at the bottom of the Mac screen. It provides controls for full-screen capture, window capture, selection capture, and screen recording. Its **Options** menu lets you change the save location, add a timer delay, and toggle the floating thumbnail.

Important differences:

- **Annotation:** Windows Snipping Tool supports immediate drawing. The Mac toolbar has no built-in annotation tools; click the floating thumbnail within 5 seconds to open Markup, or annotate later in Preview.
- **Screen recording:** The Mac toolbar can record the full screen or a selected area. Windows recording is provided separately through Xbox Game Bar or Snipping Tool.
- **Timer:** Mac offers 5-second and 10-second delays, useful for dropdown menus, hover states, and tooltips that disappear when keys are pressed.

## How to remap a key as Print Screen on Mac

If four-key shortcuts are inconvenient, remap screenshot shortcuts.

### Using System Settings

Open **System Settings > Keyboard > Keyboard Shortcuts > Screenshots**. Click the shortcut column for a screenshot action and press the desired key combination. For example, assign **F13**, if available, or **Ctrl+Shift+S** to capture a selected area to the clipboard.

### Using Karabiner-Elements with a Windows keyboard

[Karabiner-Elements](https://karabiner-elements.pqrs.org/) can map the Print Screen key on an external Windows keyboard to a Mac screenshot shortcut. Install it, open **Simple Modifications**, and map **Print Screen** to **Cmd+Shift+3** for file capture or **Cmd+Control+Shift+3** for clipboard capture.

Complex Karabiner rules can map Print Screen to clipboard capture and **Alt+Print Screen** to active-window capture.

### Assigning a single key in System Settings

Go to **System Settings > Keyboard > Keyboard Shortcuts > Screenshots**, double-click a shortcut, and reassign it. An unused function key such as **F6** can provide a single-key screenshot shortcut.

## Where Mac screenshots are saved

Mac screenshots are saved by default as PNG files on the Desktop. A filename follows this pattern:

```text
Screenshot 2026-04-26 at 14.32.15.png
```

Windows Print Screen copies to the clipboard, while Win+Print Screen saves to `Pictures\Screenshots`.

### Change the save folder

Press **Cmd+Shift+5**, choose **Options**, and select a folder under **Save to**. Alternatively, run:

```bash
defaults write com.apple.screencapture location ~/Pictures/Screenshots
killall SystemUIServer
```

### Default to the clipboard

macOS has no single toggle for clipboard-by-default screenshots. Remap screenshot shortcuts to their **Control** variants in System Settings so captures go to the clipboard rather than files.

## Other differences Windows switchers notice

### Floating thumbnail

After a screenshot, Mac displays a thumbnail in the bottom-right corner for about 5 seconds. Click it to annotate, drag it into an app, or swipe it right to dismiss it. To disable the thumbnail, run:

```bash
defaults write com.apple.screencapture show-thumbnail -bool false
killall SystemUIServer
```

### Drop shadow

Mac window screenshots include a drop shadow by default; Windows window screenshots do not. Hold **Option** while clicking a window in capture mode, or disable the shadow globally:

```bash
defaults write com.apple.screencapture disable-shadow -bool true
killall SystemUIServer
```

### Retina resolution

On a MacBook with a Retina display, screenshots are 2× the displayed resolution. A 1440×900 display produces a 2880×1800 screenshot, resulting in larger files.

### Screen sketch and annotation

Windows Snip & Sketch supports immediate drawing. Mac's closest built-in option is Markup through the floating thumbnail, with more limited tools. Dedicated screenshot software can provide more extensive annotation.

## The fastest Mac screenshot workflow for Windows switchers

1. **Learn two shortcuts:** use **Cmd+Shift+4** for a selection saved to a file and **Cmd+Control+Shift+4** for a selection copied to the clipboard.
2. **Move the save location:** choose a dedicated Screenshots folder instead of the Desktop.
3. **Disable the thumbnail:** use the Terminal command above for faster repeated captures.
4. **Use a screenshot tool:** LazyScreenshots adds annotation, auto-paste, and a single shortcut that captures and delivers the screenshot to the target app.

LazyScreenshots captures, annotates, and auto-pastes screenshots into **Claude, Cursor, and ChatGPT**. We offer it for **$29 one-time**, replacing a four-key combination with one shortcut.
