# How to Remove the Background from a Screenshot on Mac

We explain how to isolate a product image, UI component, logo, or person from a Mac screenshot and produce a clean transparent PNG. macOS has built-in background-removal tools since Ventura. On Apple Silicon, processing runs on-device using the Neural Engine, so screenshots remain on your Mac.

## Why remove a screenshot background?

A raw screenshot can include toolbars, browser chrome, desktop wallpaper, and other apps. Removing the background lets you use the isolated subject in presentations, marketing pages, documentation, and design tools without that surrounding visual material.

## Method 1: Finder Quick Actions

Finder Quick Actions is the fastest option and requires no separate app:

1. Find the screenshot in Finder.
2. Right-click, or Ctrl-click, the file.
3. Hover over **Quick Actions**.
4. Click **Remove Background**.

macOS creates a new transparent PNG in the same folder with the suffix **“Background Removed”**. For example: `Screenshot 2026-06-28 Background Removed.png`. The original remains unchanged.

### Batch processing

Select multiple screenshots in Finder. Hold **Cmd** to select individual files or **Shift** to select a range. Right-click and choose **Quick Actions > Remove Background**. macOS creates a transparent version of each selected file.

## Method 2: Preview

Preview provides automatic machine-learning removal and manual removal with Instant Alpha.

### Automatic background removal

1. Open the screenshot in Preview.
2. Select **Tools > Remove Background**, or press **Cmd+Shift+K**.
3. Preview detects the subject and removes the rest.
4. Save the file; Preview converts it to a PNG with transparency.

This works best when the subject is clearly defined, such as a product photo, a UI mockup on a solid background, or a person in a video call. It is less effective when several overlapping elements have similar colors.

### Manual removal with Instant Alpha

1. Open the screenshot in Preview.
2. Click the **Markup** toolbar button with the pencil icon.
3. Click **Instant Alpha**, shown as a magic-wand icon.
4. Click and drag across the background you want to remove. Preview highlights the selected region in pink.
5. Press **Delete**.
6. Repeat for other background areas.

Instant Alpha selects by color similarity: dragging farther selects a wider range of similar colors. It provides more control for gradients and multicolored backgrounds where automatic removal leaves areas behind.

## Method 3: Subject isolation (lift and drag)

macOS can isolate a subject and let you transfer it directly to another app without saving a new file. This is available in Preview, Photos, Quick Look, Safari, and other apps supporting Apple’s subject-isolation API.

1. Open the screenshot in Preview, Photos, or Quick Look. In Finder, press **Space** to open Quick Look.
2. Hover over the main subject.
3. Wait for the glowing outline around the subject.
4. Click and hold the outlined subject, then drag it into Keynote, Pages, Mail, Messages, Figma, or another app.

You can also right-click the highlighted subject and choose **Copy Subject**, then paste it with **Cmd+V**.

## Method 4: macOS Shortcuts automation

Create a reusable Shortcut:

1. Open the **Shortcuts** app.
2. Click **+** to create a Shortcut.
3. Add **Remove Background from Image**.
4. Add **Save File**, or choose **Copy to Clipboard**.
5. Set the input to **Shortcut Input** so it can run from the Share menu or as a Quick Action.

The saved Shortcut appears in the right-click menu for image files. You can assign a keyboard shortcut under **System Settings > Keyboard > Keyboard Shortcuts > Services**.

### Folder Action for automatic processing

To create a background-removed version whenever a screenshot is saved:

1. Create a dedicated folder, such as `~/Pictures/Remove-BG`.
2. Build a Shortcut that accepts an image, removes its background, and saves the result to another folder.
3. Use Automator to create a Folder Action that runs the Shortcut when a new file appears.
4. Set the screenshot save location to that folder with **Cmd+Shift+5 > Options**.

## Method 5: Terminal with `sips` and Core Image

Developers and power users can use macOS’s `sips` scriptable image-processing system and Python with Core Image or Vision. The following example uses Vision to generate a foreground instance mask:

## Tips for better results

- **Use high contrast.** The ML model works best when subject and background colors differ clearly. A dark UI element on white isolates more cleanly than a gray dialog on a gray desktop.
- **Crop first.** If a screenshot contains several elements, crop it to the desired subject before removal so the model can focus on it.
- **Inspect edges at 200%.** Automatic removal can leave a 1–2 pixel fringe of the original background. Use Instant Alpha to clean it up.
- **Keep transparent files as PNG.** Background removal produces a PNG with an alpha channel. Saving as JPG turns transparent areas white.
- **Apple Silicon is fastest.** On M1 and later, processing uses the Neural Engine and takes under a second for most screenshots. Intel Macs use the CPU and take longer.
- **Prefer solid backgrounds.** White or dark-mode backgrounds generally produce cleaner results than gradients, wallpapers, or cluttered desktops.

## Background removal not working? Fixes

- **“Remove Background” is missing from Quick Actions:** Confirm that macOS Ventura or later is installed under **System Settings > General > About**. Also check **System Settings > Privacy & Security > Extensions > Finder** and enable Quick Actions.
- **Edges are rough or jagged:** The subject may not contrast sufficiently with its background. Try Preview’s **Cmd+Shift+K** removal, then clean the edges with Instant Alpha.
- **The wrong subject is detected:** Crop the screenshot so it contains only the desired subject and try again. The model prioritizes the most prominent subject.
- **Processing is slow:** Intel Macs use the CPU and may take several seconds per image; Apple Silicon Macs should usually finish in under a second.
- **Transparent areas appear white:** The file may have been saved as JPG. Save it as PNG to preserve the alpha channel.
