# How to Screenshot Apple TV from Your Mac

**May 19, 2026 · LazyScreenshots Team**

Apple TV has no screenshot shortcut on the Siri Remote. We show how to connect Apple TV wirelessly to a Mac and capture the home screen, games, settings, tvOS interfaces, and other non-DRM content through QuickTime Player or Xcode.

## Requirements

| Requirement | Details |
| --- | --- |
| Apple TV | Apple TV HD (4th generation) or Apple TV 4K (any generation) |
| Mac | Any Mac running macOS Monterey 12 or later |
| Network | Mac and Apple TV on the same Wi-Fi network |
| Software | QuickTime Player (pre-installed) or Xcode (free from the App Store) |

Apple TV 3rd generation and earlier do not support wireless pairing with these methods.

## Method 1: QuickTime Player

QuickTime is pre-installed and connects wirelessly.

### Step 1: Pair

1. Put the Mac and Apple TV on the same Wi-Fi network.
2. Open QuickTime Player.
3. Choose **File > New Movie Recording**.
4. Click the dropdown beside the record button.
5. Under **Camera**, select Apple TV.
6. Enter the four-digit code shown on Apple TV when prompted.

The Apple TV display appears in QuickTime. The Mac remembers the pairing code for future sessions.

### Step 2: Capture

With the display mirrored:

- `Cmd+Shift+4`, then `Space`, and click the QuickTime window to capture the complete display.
- `Cmd+Shift+4` and drag to capture a specific region.
- `Cmd+Shift+5` to use the Screenshot toolbar.

Hold `Option` while clicking the QuickTime window to omit its shadow.

## Method 2: Xcode

Xcode captures at Apple TV’s native output resolution and saves directly as an image file.

### Step 1: Install and pair

1. Download Xcode from the Mac App Store. It is free but about 12 GB.
2. Open Xcode and choose **Window > Devices and Simulators**.
3. Ensure Apple TV is on and on the same Wi-Fi network.
4. Select Apple TV in the left sidebar.
5. Enter the pairing code if prompted.

### Step 2: Capture

1. Navigate Apple TV to the desired screen.
2. Select Apple TV in the Devices window.
3. Click **Take Screenshot**.
4. Xcode saves a PNG to the Desktop.

Xcode captures the full output resolution. A 4K Apple TV setting produces a 3840×2160 image, which is higher resolution than a QuickTime-window capture scaled to the Mac display.

### QuickTime versus Xcode

| Feature | QuickTime | Xcode |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Setup complexity | Quick; already installed | Requires 12 GB download |
| Screenshot resolution | Limited by QuickTime window size | Full native resolution, up to 4K |
| Direct save | No; use macOS shortcuts | Yes; one click to Desktop |
| Screen recording | Yes | No; screenshots only |
| Best for | Quick captures and video | High-resolution documentation screenshots |

## Resolutions by Apple TV model

| Apple TV model | Max output | Screenshot resolution |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Apple TV HD (4th gen, 2015) | 1080p | 1920 × 1080 px |
| Apple TV 4K (1st gen, 2017) | 4K SDR/HDR | 3840 × 2160 px |
| Apple TV 4K (2nd gen, 2021) | 4K HDR, Dolby Vision | 3840 × 2160 px |
| Apple TV 4K (3rd gen, 2022) | 4K HDR, Dolby Vision | 3840 × 2160 px |

Check or change output through **Settings > Video and Audio > Format** on Apple TV. Higher resolution gives sharper but larger images.

## DRM content

Netflix, Disney+, Apple TV+, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, and other protected streams produce an entirely black capture because they use HDCP. There is no workaround through QuickTime, Xcode, or third-party capture software.

Content generally available for capture includes:

- tvOS home screen and app grid
- Settings and system menus
- Apple Arcade and other non-DRM games
- Fitness+ workout summaries, although the video may be blocked
- Photos and home-screen customizations
- Third-party apps without DRM

## Troubleshooting

### Apple TV does not appear

1. Confirm the same Wi-Fi network through **Settings > Network** on Apple TV and **System Settings > Wi-Fi** on Mac.
2. Wake Apple TV with the Siri Remote.
3. Restart both devices.
4. On Apple TV, check **Settings > Remotes and Devices > Remote App and Devices** and enable pairing.
5. Check that the Mac firewall is not blocking the connection through **System Settings > Network > Firewall**.

### Screenshot is black or blank

- An entirely black image usually indicates DRM-protected content.
- If QuickTime displays Apple TV but the capture is blank, use `Cmd+Shift+4` with a drag selection rather than window capture.
- In Xcode, ensure Apple TV is awake when clicking **Take Screenshot**.

### Screenshot is blurry

- Enlarge the QuickTime preview window or use Xcode for native resolution.
- Set Apple TV to its highest resolution through **Settings > Video and Audio > Format**.
- Improve Wi-Fi quality by moving the Mac closer to the router or using 5 GHz Wi-Fi.

## Quick reference

| Method | Resolution | Setup required |
| --- | --- | --- |
| QuickTime + macOS shortcuts | Depends on window size | None; QuickTime is pre-installed |
| Xcode Devices > Take Screenshot | Full native, up to 4K | Install Xcode (~12 GB) |
