# How to Take a Screenshot on Mac with an External or Windows Keyboard

**April 15, 2026 · LazyScreenshots Team**

We explain modifier-key mappings, screenshot shortcuts, Print Screen options, custom remapping, compact-keyboard constraints, and a faster workflow for external keyboards. The guide applies to macOS Sequoia, Sonoma, and Ventura.

## The problem: no Command key, no obvious shortcut

macOS does not recognize **Print Screen** natively, and Windows-designed keyboards do not have a physical ⌘ key. The default screenshot shortcuts use Command, Shift, and a number, so the important question is which physical key supplies Command.

## Key mapping: Windows keyboard to Mac

By default, macOS maps non-Apple keyboard modifiers as follows:

| Windows key | Maps to Mac | Symbol |
|---|---|---|
| Windows / Super | Command | ⌘ |
| Alt | Option | ⌥ |
| Ctrl | Control | ⌃ |

Screenshot shortcuts are:

| Action | Keys on Windows keyboard |
|---|---|
| Full-screen screenshot | Windows + Shift + 3 |
| Selection screenshot | Windows + Shift + 4 |
| Screenshot toolbar | Windows + Shift + 5 |
| Specific window | Windows + Shift + 4, then Space |
| Copy screenshot to clipboard | Add Ctrl to any shortcut above |

Use the **Windows/Super** key rather than Ctrl as the primary modifier.

## Swap modifier keys in System Settings

Open **System Settings > Keyboard > Keyboard Shortcuts > Modifier Keys**, select the external keyboard, and reassign physical keys. You can:

- Swap Windows and Alt so the key next to the spacebar acts as Command.
- Map Caps Lock to Control or Command.
- Map a key to **No Action** to disable it.

These changes apply per keyboard, so they do not alter the MacBook's built-in keyboard.

## What about the Print Screen key?

macOS ignores Print Screen by default. Options:

1. **Remap it in System Settings.** Go to **System Settings > Keyboard > Keyboard Shortcuts > Screenshots**, choose a shortcut such as “Save picture of screen as a file,” and press Print Screen. Some keyboards expose a keycode macOS can recognize; others do not.
2. **Use Karabiner-Elements.** [Karabiner-Elements](https://karabiner-elements.pqrs.org/) is a free, open-source macOS remapping tool. In **Simple Modifications**, select the external keyboard and map Print Screen to F13, then assign F13 to a screenshot shortcut in System Settings. Complex Modifications can map Print Screen directly to the screenshot sequence.
3. **Use a third-party screenshot tool.** We let you assign any single key or key combination as the screenshot trigger.

## Keyboards with Fn layers and compact layouts

60% and 65% keyboards such as the Keychron K6, Anne Pro, and HHKB may require **Windows + Shift + Fn + 3** because the number row is behind an Fn layer.

Alternatives include:

- Windows + Shift + S
- Hyper key (Caps Lock mapped to Command+Control+Option+Shift) + S
- F5 or F6 assigned in System Settings

Set custom shortcuts under **System Settings > Keyboard > Keyboard Shortcuts > Screenshots** by double-clicking a shortcut and pressing the desired combination.

## Bluetooth and wireless keyboard quirks

Some Bluetooth keyboards delay modifier registration. If a shortcut is intermittent, hold Windows + Shift briefly, then press 3. If the keyboard has a macOS/Windows mode switch, select Mac mode; Windows mode can change mappings and keycodes. Logitech keyboards with Logi Options+ can assign a macOS screenshot shortcut button to any key.

## Quick reference: screenshot shortcuts on any keyboard

| Keyboard type | Full screen | Selection | Toolbar |
|---|---|---|---|
| Apple keyboard | ⌘ ⇧ 3 | ⌘ ⇧ 4 | ⌘ ⇧ 5 |
| Windows keyboard | Win Shift 3 | Win Shift 4 | Win Shift 5 |
| Custom remap | Any combination set in System Settings > Keyboard Shortcuts | Any combination set in System Settings > Keyboard Shortcuts | Any combination set in System Settings > Keyboard Shortcuts |

## A faster workflow for external keyboard users

After mapping the keys, switching away from a GitHub issue, Slack message, or code review to annotate a screenshot can still interrupt your work. We capture, annotate, and auto-paste into the application you are already using. LazyScreenshots works with any keyboard layout and can paste screenshots into Claude, Cursor, and ChatGPT for **$29 one-time**.
