# How to Screenshot FaceTime on Mac

**May 20, 2026 · LazyScreenshots Team**

We explain how to capture FaceTime calls on a Mac using standard macOS screenshots or FaceTime Live Photos, including group calls, shared screens, self-view, privacy, troubleshooting, and capture tips.

## Screenshots vs. Live Photos

FaceTime offers two different capture methods:

| Method | Notification sent? | Saves to | Format |
|---|---|---|---|
| macOS screenshot (`Cmd+Shift+3/4`) | No | Desktop, or a custom location | PNG still image |
| FaceTime Live Photo | Yes—both people are notified | Photos app | Live Photo: still image plus 1.5 seconds of video |

Standard macOS shortcuts capture whatever is visible, including the FaceTime window, without notifying anyone. FaceTime Live Photos create a short motion photo, notify both participants, and give both people a copy.

## Method 1: Use macOS screenshot shortcuts

Standard screenshots require no setup, do not send FaceTime notifications, and work during any call type.

### Capture the entire screen

Press `Cmd+Shift+3` during the call. We capture the entire screen, including the FaceTime window, your self-view, other visible windows, and desktop items. The PNG saves to the Desktop.

### Capture the FaceTime window

1. Press `Cmd+Shift+4`.
2. Press `Space`; the cursor becomes a camera icon.
3. Click the FaceTime window.

This captures the window with its drop shadow on a transparent background. Hold `Option` while clicking to omit the shadow.

### Capture a specific area

Press `Cmd+Shift+4` and drag around the desired part of the FaceTime window. This can isolate the other person’s video feed, exclude your self-view, or tightly frame a shared screen.

### Hide FaceTime controls

FaceTime displays controls such as mute, end call, effects, and SharePlay when the cursor is over the window.

1. Move the cursor away from the FaceTime window.
2. Wait about two seconds for the controls to fade.
3. Press the screenshot shortcut.

With window capture (`Cmd+Shift+4+Space`), the controls can reappear when you hover over the window to click it. For a clean capture, use `Cmd+Shift+4` and drag a selection; the crosshair does not trigger the controls to return.

## Method 2: FaceTime Live Photos

A FaceTime Live Photo combines a still image with 1.5 seconds of motion. It is separate from a standard screenshot and follows FaceTime-specific rules.

### Enable Live Photos

Both people must enable Live Photos. If either person has the feature disabled, the shutter button does not appear.

1. Open FaceTime on your Mac.
2. Choose **FaceTime > Settings**. On older macOS versions, choose **FaceTime > Preferences**.
3. Under **General**, enable **Allow Live Photos to be captured during Video calls**.
4. Ask the other participant to enable the same setting on their Mac, iPhone, or iPad.

### Take a Live Photo

1. During a FaceTime video call, hover over the video window to show the controls.
2. Click the **shutter button** (camera icon) in the bottom-left area of the controls.
3. Both people see a brief flash animation and a notification.

The Live Photo is saved in the Photos app under **Live Photos** and **Recents**. The other person receives a copy in their Photos app.

### Live Photo limitations

- Live Photos work only in one-on-one calls; they are unavailable in group FaceTime calls with three or more people.
- They work only during video calls, not FaceTime Audio calls.
- Both parties must opt in.
- Both people are notified; there is no silent Live Photo option.
- Live Photos always save to the Photos app; the save location cannot be changed.

## Group FaceTime calls

Group calls use a dynamic grid. Active speakers are highlighted and enlarged, so the layout can shift while people speak.

### Capture the full grid

Use `Cmd+Shift+4+Space`, then click the FaceTime window. Capture during a pause for a more stable grid.

### Capture one participant

Press `Cmd+Shift+4` and drag a tight selection around the participant’s tile. FaceTime does not natively isolate individual video feeds, but area selection does.

### Pin a participant

Right-click or Control-click a participant’s tile and choose **Pin**. Their tile remains large and centered regardless of who is speaking, creating a more stable screenshot target.

## Shared screens and SharePlay

When someone shares their screen, the shared content appears as a separate view inside the FaceTime window.

- **Shared screen:** Press `Cmd+Shift+4` and drag over the shared-screen area. The capture uses whatever resolution is being streamed.
- **SharePlay:** Music, video, and workout apps render inside FaceTime and can be captured normally. DRM-protected content, including Apple TV+ and Netflix, may appear as a black rectangle.

## Capture your self-view

Your self-view is the small picture-in-picture view of your camera in a corner of the FaceTime window.

- Press `Cmd+Shift+4` and drag around the self-view tile.
- For a higher-quality self-capture, open Photo Booth alongside FaceTime. Photo Booth captures your camera feed at full resolution.

## Privacy considerations

FaceTime does not detect or notify anyone when you use macOS screenshot shortcuts. Only FaceTime Live Photos trigger notifications.

- **If you are capturing:** Standard screenshots are silent. Respect the other person’s privacy, particularly during personal or sensitive calls.
- **If you are on camera:** FaceTime has no screenshot-blocking feature, so screenshots are possible during any video call. Keep your camera off or check what appears in your background when privacy matters.
- **Before sharing:** Consider whether the other person would be comfortable with their image being shared, especially for children or professional calls.

## Troubleshooting

### The screenshot shows a black or blank FaceTime window

Older macOS versions or particular GPU configurations can cause the video feed to appear black.

1. Use area selection (`Cmd+Shift+4`) instead of window capture.
2. Disable hardware acceleration if that option is available in the relevant context.
3. Update macOS. The issue was largely resolved in macOS Ventura and later.

### The Live Photo button does not appear

1. Confirm that both people enabled Live Photos in FaceTime settings.
2. Confirm that the call is a one-on-one video call, not a group or audio-only call.
3. Restart FaceTime and try again.

### FaceTime controls keep appearing

Use area selection: press `Cmd+Shift+4` and drag. The crosshair does not trigger FaceTime’s hover-to-show controls, allowing you to select the video area without the buttons appearing.

## Best practices

- Use area selection (`Cmd+Shift+4`) for clean framing without call controls.
- Add `Ctrl` to the screenshot shortcut to copy the capture directly to the clipboard, then paste it into Messages, Slack, or email.
- Capture during natural pauses, when faces are still and well lit.
- Check your self-view before capturing if it is visible.
- Click the floating screenshot thumbnail to open Markup and add arrows, text, or highlights before saving.
