# How to Take a Screenshot on Mac Mini

**May 21, 2026 · LazyScreenshots Team**

We explain macOS screenshot workflows for Mac Mini users, including external keyboards and monitors, multiple displays, Sidecar, keyboard-free capture, headless remote capture, file locations, Terminal automation, and troubleshooting.

## The three essential shortcuts

| Shortcut | Captures |
|---|---|
| `Cmd+Shift+3` | Full screen; one PNG per connected display |
| `Cmd+Shift+4` | A selected area; drag the crosshair |
| `Cmd+Shift+4`, then `Space` | A specific window or menu; click the highlighted window |

Shortcuts save PNG files to the Desktop by default. A floating thumbnail appears in the bottom-right for five seconds; click it to annotate with Markup, or let it disappear to save the file unchanged.

### Copy instead of saving

Add `Ctrl` to any shortcut:

- `Ctrl+Cmd+Shift+3` — full screen to the clipboard
- `Ctrl+Cmd+Shift+4` — selected area to the clipboard
- `Ctrl+Cmd+Shift+4`, then `Space` — window to the clipboard

This lets us paste directly into Slack, email, or documents without creating a Desktop file.

## Screenshot toolbar: `Cmd+Shift+5`

The toolbar offers:

- Capture Entire Screen
- Capture Selected Window
- Capture Selected Portion
- Record Entire Screen
- Record Selected Portion

**Options** changes the save location, sets a 5-second or 10-second timer, shows or hides the floating thumbnail, and includes or excludes the mouse pointer.

## Display resolution and file-size examples

Screenshots use the connected display’s native pixel resolution. A 4K monitor scaled to “Looks like 1920 × 1080” still produces a 3840 × 2160 capture.

| Connected display | Resolution | Full-screen PNG size |
|---|---:|---:|
| Apple Studio Display | 5120 × 2880 | 8–18 MB |
| Apple Pro Display XDR | 6016 × 3384 | 10–22 MB |
| 4K UHD monitor | 3840 × 2160 | 4–10 MB |
| 1440p monitor | 2560 × 1440 | 2–5 MB |
| 1080p monitor | 1920 × 1080 | 1–3 MB |
| iPad via Sidecar | Varies by iPad model | 2–6 MB |

To use JPG by default:

```bash
defaults write com.apple.screencapture type jpg
```

JPG files are typically 60–80% smaller than PNGs, with slight compression artifacts around text edges. We automatically compress and beautify Mac Mini screenshots with backgrounds, annotations, and device frames. [Try LazyScreenshots Free](https://www.lazyscreenshots.com/)

## Multiple monitors and Sidecar

`Cmd+Shift+3` creates a separate PNG for each connected display. Two monitors produce two files; three monitors produce three files, with timestamp and number suffixes.

To capture one display:

1. Press `Cmd+Shift+5`.
2. Move the toolbar to the desired display if necessary.
3. Choose **Capture Entire Screen**, then click that display.

Alternatively, use `Cmd+Shift+4` and select only that display. With Sidecar, `Cmd+Shift+3` captures the monitor and iPad as separate files; use `Cmd+Shift+5` and click the iPad to capture it alone.

## Third-party and Windows keyboards

| Mac key | Windows-keyboard equivalent |
|---|---|
| `Cmd` | Windows key |
| `Option` | `Alt` |
| `Ctrl` | `Ctrl` |

Use `Win+Shift+3` for full screen, `Win+Shift+4` for a selected area, and `Win+Shift+5` for the toolbar.

To assign Print Screen:

1. Open **System Settings > Keyboard > Keyboard Shortcuts > Screenshots**.
2. Select the shortcut to change, such as “Save picture of screen as a file.”
3. Press **Print Screen**.

On compact keyboards requiring `Fn` for numbers, use `Fn+Cmd+Shift+3`, or remap the shortcut in the same settings panel.

## Capture without a keyboard

- **Screenshot app:** Open **Finder > Applications > Utilities > Screenshot**, or search for Screenshot. It provides the `Cmd+Shift+5` toolbar and works with a mouse.
- **Accessibility Keyboard:** Enable **System Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard > Accessibility Keyboard**, then click the screenshot keys onscreen.
- **Terminal:**

```bash
screencapture ~/Desktop/screenshot.png
screencapture -T 5 ~/Desktop/screenshot.png
```

The first command captures immediately; the second adds a five-second delay.

## Headless and remote Mac Mini capture

With Screen Sharing, connect from another Mac and use `Cmd+Shift+3` in the remote session. The file saves on the Mac Mini’s Desktop. To capture the Screen Sharing window on the local Mac, use `Cmd+Shift+4` and click that window.

With SSH:

```bash
ssh user@mac-mini-ip "screencapture ~/Desktop/screenshot.png"
scp user@mac-mini-ip:~/Desktop/screenshot.png ./
```

An active GUI session is required. Without a display emulator, the screen buffer may be minimal or unavailable; an HDMI dummy plug makes macOS treat a monitor as connected.

## Mac Mini model comparison

| Model | Maximum external displays | Maximum display resolution |
|---|---:|---:|
| Mac Mini M4 (2024) | 2 (HDMI + Thunderbolt) | 6K at 60Hz |
| Mac Mini M4 Pro (2024) | 3 (HDMI + 2x Thunderbolt) | 6K at 60Hz |
| Mac Mini M2 (2023) | 2 (HDMI + Thunderbolt) | 6K at 60Hz |
| Mac Mini M2 Pro (2023) | 3 (HDMI + 2x Thunderbolt) | 6K at 60Hz |
| Mac Mini M1 (2020) | 2 (HDMI + Thunderbolt) | 6K at 60Hz |
| Mac Mini Intel (2018) | 3 (HDMI + 2x Thunderbolt) | 5K at 60Hz |

## Save location

By default, screenshots are PNGs on the Desktop, with names such as `Screenshot 2026-05-21 at 10.30.15 AM.png`.

Using the toolbar: press `Cmd+Shift+5` → **Options** → **Save to**, then choose Desktop, Documents, Clipboard, Mail, Messages, Preview, or **Other Location**.

Using Terminal, create the destination folder first, then run:

```bash
defaults write com.apple.screencapture location ~/Pictures/Screenshots
killall SystemUIServer
```

## Terminal capture commands

```bash
# Full screen to file
screencapture ~/Desktop/screenshot.png
# Interactive selection
screencapture -i ~/Desktop/screenshot.png
# Specific window
screencapture -iW ~/Desktop/screenshot.png
# Capture to clipboard
screencapture -c
# Timed capture
screencapture -T 5 ~/Desktop/screenshot.png
# Capture without the window shadow
screencapture -iWo ~/Desktop/screenshot.png
# Capture as JPG
screencapture -t jpg ~/Desktop/screenshot.jpg
```

## Tips and quick fixes

- Hold `Option` while clicking a window in `Cmd+Shift+4`, `Space` mode to remove its shadow.
- Hold `Shift` while selecting to constrain movement to one axis.
- Hold `Space` while dragging to move the selection without resizing it.
- Press `Esc` to cancel.
- Disable the floating thumbnail through `Cmd+Shift+5` → **Options** → **Show Floating Thumbnail**.
- Use an HDMI display emulator for full-resolution headless captures.

If capture fails:

1. Check **System Settings > Keyboard > Keyboard Shortcuts > Screenshots** for enabled shortcuts.
2. Use **System Settings > Keyboard > Change Keyboard Type** to verify a non-Apple keyboard.
3. Quit remappers such as Karabiner-Elements or BetterTouchTool to find conflicts.
4. Run `killall SystemUIServer` in Terminal.
5. Check **System Settings > General > Storage** for free space.
6. Check the wireless keyboard battery and reconnect it under **System Settings > Bluetooth**.
