# How to Take a Screenshot on Mac Without a Keyboard

**April 13, 2026 · LazyScreenshots Team**

We explain five ways to capture screenshots on a Mac without using a physical keyboard. These options cover built-in macOS tools, accessibility features, voice control, and third-party menu-bar applications.

## Method 1: The Screenshot app in Launchpad

macOS includes a dedicated **Screenshot** app that can be operated with a mouse or trackpad.

### How to open it

1. Open **Launchpad** from the Dock.
2. Open the **Other** folder.
3. Select **Screenshot**.

Alternatively, open **Finder**, choose **Applications → Utilities**, and double-click **Screenshot**.

The toolbar lets you capture the entire screen, a selected window, or a selected portion. Its **Options** button provides a 5-second or 10-second timer, save-location selection, and a floating-thumbnail toggle.

**Best for:** Quick captures when a keyboard is unavailable. It provides the same broad options as the keyboard-shortcut workflow.

## Method 2: Preview’s screenshot feature

Preview can capture screenshots and open them immediately for editing.

1. Open **Preview** from Applications or the Dock.
2. In the menu bar, select **File → Take Screenshot**.
3. Choose one of these modes:
   - **From Selection** — drag to select a rectangular region.
   - **From Window** — click a window to capture it.
   - **From Entire Screen** — capture everything after a short countdown.

The result opens in Preview as an unsaved image. You can crop it, use Markup tools to annotate it, adjust colors, and save it wherever you choose.

**Best for:** Capturing and editing immediately, especially when annotation is needed before sharing.

## Method 3: Ask Siri

On a Mac with Siri enabled and running macOS Sierra or later, you can capture by voice.

1. Click the **Siri** icon in the menu bar or Dock.
2. Say **“Take a screenshot.”**

Siri captures the full screen and saves it to the Desktop, or to the configured screenshot location. You can say **“Take a screenshot of the window”** for a window capture. The result is a PNG, using the same system screenshot mechanism as the keyboard shortcut.

Siri captures appear after a brief delay, so this method is unsuitable for menus or tooltips requiring precise timing. The Siri interface may also appear in a full-screen capture.

**Best for:** Hands-free screenshots when neither keyboard use nor precise mouse control is available.

## Method 4: Voice Control

macOS **Voice Control** lets you operate the Mac by voice, including clicking controls, navigating menus, and simulating keyboard shortcuts.

### Enable Voice Control

Go to **System Settings → Accessibility → Voice Control** and toggle it on. A microphone icon appears in the menu bar while Voice Control is listening.

Example commands include:

- **“Click File”**, then **“Click Take Screenshot”** — use Preview’s screenshot feature.
- **“Open Screenshot”** — launch the Screenshot app.
- **“Press Command Shift 3”** — simulate a full-screen screenshot shortcut.

You can say **“Press Command Shift 4”** to display the selection crosshair, then use a mouse or trackpad to select a region. Voice Control can also use custom commands: in Voice Control settings, choose **Commands** and add a phrase such as **“Capture screen”** that triggers the screenshot shortcut.

**Best for:** Regular screenshot access when keyboard use is physically difficult. Voice Control can simulate any keyboard shortcut and is the most capable built-in keyboard-free option described here.

## Method 5: Third-party tools with menu-bar access

Many Mac screenshot applications provide a menu-bar icon for click-based capture. A typical workflow is:

1. Click the screenshot app’s menu-bar icon.
2. Select a capture mode, such as full screen, window, region, or scrolling capture.
3. Click to capture.

Some tools also support trackpad gestures or Touch Bar buttons on older MacBook Pro models. With an iPad used as a secondary display through Sidecar, a sidebar button can also be configured to trigger screenshots.

**Best for:** Power users who want one-click capture plus features such as annotation, cloud upload, and automatic organization.

## Quick comparison

| Method | Capture types | Needs keyboard | Edit built-in |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Screenshot app | Full, window, selection, recording | No | No |
| Preview | Full, window, selection | No | Yes (Markup) |
| Siri | Full, window | No | No |
| Voice Control | All (simulates shortcuts) | No | No |
| Third-party menu bar | All + extras | No | Usually yes |

## Tips for Windows keyboard users on Mac

When a non-Apple keyboard is connected to a Mac, the main modifier mappings are:

- **Windows key** = **Cmd**
- **Alt** = **Option**
- **Ctrl** = **Control**

The screenshot shortcuts therefore become:

- **Win + Shift + 3** — full screen
- **Win + Shift + 4** — selected area
- **Win + Shift + 5** — screenshot toolbar

If these shortcuts do not work, go to **System Settings → Keyboard → Keyboard Shortcuts** and check that screenshot shortcuts are enabled and not reassigned. To change the modifier mapping, open **System Settings → Keyboard → Modifier Keys**, select the external keyboard, and swap modifier keys as needed.

## The fastest keyboard-free workflow

For regular keyboard-free capture, we offer a menu-bar workflow that captures, annotates, and delivers the screenshot to the target application in one click. **LazyScreenshots** places a capture button in the menu bar and auto-pastes the result into the app currently being used. Screenshots can be captured and annotated before being sent to **Claude, Cursor, or ChatGPT**, without keyboard shortcuts or window switching.

LazyScreenshots captures, annotates, and auto-pastes screenshots into Claude, Cursor, and ChatGPT. It costs **$29 one-time**.
