# How to Take a Screenshot on MacBook Air

**May 13, 2026 · LazyScreenshots Team**

We explain every built-in way to capture a MacBook Air screen. MacBook Air models—including the 2020 M1, 2022 M2, 2024 M3, and 2025 M4—use the same macOS screenshot shortcuts, save locations, and built-in tools. macOS uses multi-key shortcuts rather than a dedicated Print Screen key.

## Capture the entire screen

Press `Cmd+Shift+3` to capture everything visible on the display. The screen flashes, a thumbnail appears in the bottom-right corner, and macOS saves a PNG screenshot to the Desktop. A filename follows this pattern:

### MacBook Air screen resolutions

macOS captures at full Retina resolution, which is 2× the display’s logical resolution.

| MacBook Air model | Display | Screenshot size |
| --- | --- | --- |
| MacBook Air 13" (M1, 2020) | 2560 × 1600 | 2560 × 1600 px |
| MacBook Air 13" (M2, 2022) | 2560 × 1664 | 2560 × 1664 px |
| MacBook Air 15" (M2/M3, 2023–24) | 2880 × 1864 | 2880 × 1864 px |
| MacBook Air 13" (M3/M4, 2024–25) | 2560 × 1664 | 2560 × 1664 px |

Retina captures are larger than the logical display dimensions. Resize them after capture when you need smaller images for the web or documentation.

## Capture a selected area

Press `Cmd+Shift+4`, then click and drag a rectangular selection. Release the mouse button or trackpad to capture the selected area.

### Tips for precise selections

- Watch the pixel dimensions displayed next to the crosshair while dragging.
- Hold `Space` while dragging to move the entire selection without resizing it.
- Hold `Shift` while dragging to lock one axis—width or height—and adjust only the other.
- Hold `Option` while dragging to resize from the center rather than the corner.
- Press `Escape` to cancel the capture.

## Capture a specific window

Press `Cmd+Shift+4`, then immediately press `Space`. The cursor becomes a camera icon. Hover over a window; it highlights in blue. Click to capture that window.

macOS normally adds a drop shadow. Hold `Option` while clicking the window to capture it without the shadow.

### What counts as a window

Window capture can detect and capture:

- The menu bar
- The Dock
- The Desktop wallpaper, without icons
- Individual dialog boxes and sheets
- Notification Center widgets

## Use the Screenshot app (`Cmd+Shift+5`)

Press `Cmd+Shift+5` to open the Screenshot toolbar at the bottom of the screen.

| Button | What it does |
| --- | --- |
| Capture Entire Screen | Same as `Cmd+Shift+3` |
| Capture Selected Window | Same as `Cmd+Shift+4`, then `Space` |
| Capture Selected Portion | Drag a resizable selection box |
| Record Entire Screen | Start a full-screen video recording |
| Record Selected Portion | Record a specific area of the screen |

### The Options menu

Select **Options** in the Screenshot toolbar to configure:

- **Save To:** Desktop, Documents, Clipboard, Mail, Messages, or a custom folder
- **Timer:** A 5-second or 10-second delay before capture
- **Show Floating Thumbnail:** Turn the preview thumbnail on or off
- **Remember Last Selection:** Reuse the last selection area when reopening the tool
- **Show Mouse Pointer:** Include or exclude the cursor

## Copy a screenshot to the clipboard

Add `Ctrl` to a screenshot shortcut to copy the capture instead of saving a file:

- `Cmd+Ctrl+Shift+3` — copy the full screen
- `Cmd+Ctrl+Shift+4` — copy a selected area
- `Cmd+Ctrl+Shift+4`, then `Space` — copy a window

This lets you paste directly into Slack, email, Google Docs, or AI coding tools without locating and dragging a file.

## Take a screenshot without a keyboard

If shortcuts do not work or you prefer a visual workflow:

1. Open **Finder**.
2. Go to **Applications > Utilities**.
3. Open **Screenshot**, or press `Cmd+Space` to open Spotlight and type `Screenshot`.

You can also use Preview: open Preview, select **File > Take Screenshot**, and choose a capture mode.

## MacBook Air function-key row

MacBook Air models have full-size physical F1–F12 function keys with brightness, volume, and other system-control icons. Unlike older MacBook Pro models with a Touch Bar, the Air uses physical function keys, and screenshot shortcuts work whether function-key behavior is set to standard or media.

If `Cmd+Shift+3` does not work, check **System Settings > Keyboard** to ensure the shortcut is enabled and has not been reassigned. Third-party apps such as Karabiner-Elements or screen-recording software can sometimes intercept these shortcuts.

## Change where screenshots are saved

1. Press `Cmd+Shift+5`.
2. Click **Options**.
3. Under **Save to**, select a location, or select **Other Location** to choose a custom folder.

For a permanent change in Terminal:

```sh
# Save screenshots to a Screenshots folder
mkdir -p ~/Pictures/Screenshots
defaults write com.apple.screencapture location ~/Pictures/Screenshots
killall SystemUIServer
```

## Change the screenshot format from PNG

MacBook Air screenshots default to PNG. Use JPG for smaller files suitable for email, Slack, or web uploads:

```sh
# Switch to JPG
defaults write com.apple.screencapture type jpg
killall SystemUIServer
# Switch back to PNG
defaults write com.apple.screencapture type png
killall SystemUIServer
```

On macOS Tahoe with HDR-capable MacBook Air displays, screenshots may default to HEIC. For a format change after a macOS update, use our [macOS Tahoe HEIC fix guide](https://www.lazyscreenshots.com/blog/macos-tahoe-screenshot-heic-hdr-fix/).

## Quick reference

| Shortcut | Action |

| `Cmd+Shift+5` | Open the Screenshot toolbar |
| Add `Ctrl` to any shortcut above | Copy to the clipboard instead of saving |
| `Escape` | Cancel a screenshot in progress |
