# How to Take a Screenshot on Mac with Multiple Monitors

**March 27, 2026 · LazyScreenshots Team**

We explain how to capture one region, window, or monitor when several displays are connected, and how LazyScreenshots streamlines capture-to-AI workflows.

## The multi-monitor screenshot problem

`Cmd+Shift+3` captures every connected monitor as a separate image file. With a MacBook and one external display, that produces two files; with three displays, it produces three. Developers may want a browser window on one display but also receive an unwanted capture of the code editor on another, then have to identify and delete the extras.

macOS provides built-in ways to capture a particular screen, window, or region, but the controls are not obvious.

## Method 1: Capture a specific region with `Cmd+Shift+4`

1. Press **Cmd+Shift+4** to activate the crosshair.
2. Click and drag around the exact area on the display you want.
3. Release to create one screenshot file.

The crosshair works across monitors and can span displays if needed. Keep the selection within one monitor for a single-display capture. This method is precise, works on any display, and produces one file instead of one file per monitor.

## Method 2: Capture a single window with `Cmd+Shift+4`, then Space

1. Press **Cmd+Shift+4**.
2. Press the **Space bar**; the crosshair becomes a camera icon.
3. Hover over a window on any connected display and click.

The result captures only that window, including its shadow and rounded corners, while excluding the desktop and windows behind it. Hold **Option** while clicking to omit the drop shadow and create a flat image without extra padding.

## Method 3: Use the screenshot toolbar with `Cmd+Shift+5`

Press **Cmd+Shift+5** to open the macOS screenshot toolbar. Its five capture options are:

- Full screen
- Selected window
- Selected portion
- Record full screen
- Record selected portion

**Capture Selected Window** works on windows across connected displays. **Capture Selected Portion** provides a resizable rectangle that can be moved to any monitor.

The toolbar's **Options** menu lets you choose the save location, set a timer delay, and show or hide the floating thumbnail preview. Choosing the clipboard instead of a file is useful when you want to paste directly into another application.

## Method 4: Capture one monitor only

There is no single shortcut that directly captures one monitor while ignoring the others. Use this workaround:

1. Press **Cmd+Shift+4**.
2. Immediately press **Space**.
3. Hover over the desktop wallpaper of the target monitor—not a window—and click.

This captures that monitor's entire desktop, including all windows on it, as one image. Alternatively, press **Cmd+Shift+4** and manually select the full visible area of one display; this lets you exclude the menu bar or Dock.

## Resolution differences between displays

A MacBook Pro Retina display renders at **2x pixel density**, while many external monitors run at **1x**. Screenshots from the MacBook can therefore be twice as large in pixels as screenshots from a standard external monitor, even when the displays have similar physical dimensions.

This affects documentation, bug reports, and AI coding tools: a 2x Retina image appears much larger at native resolution. Check **System Settings > Displays** to see each monitor's resolution and look for **Retina** or **HiDPI** labels.

## Common multi-monitor screenshot issues

- **Multiple files:** `Cmd+Shift+3` captures all displays. Use `Cmd+Shift+4` in region or window mode for one image.
- **Crosshair on the wrong monitor:** Move the cursor to the target display before pressing `Cmd+Shift+4`.
- **Toolbar on the wrong screen:** Move the cursor to the target display before pressing `Cmd+Shift+5`; the toolbar appears on the cursor's active display.
- **Blurry external captures:** A non-Retina 1x display produces lower-pixel-density screenshots. This is normal; the capture reflects the rendered pixels.
- **Content from an adjacent display:** Keep a `Cmd+Shift+4` selection within one monitor's edges.

## Faster screenshots for developers with multi-monitor setups

Developers often keep code on one screen and a browser, terminal, or AI assistant on another. The built-in process is still manual: capture, locate the file or use the clipboard, switch applications, and paste. With two or three displays, the switching overhead increases.

A typical debugging loop is to capture a browser bug on an external display, switch to Claude or Cursor on the laptop display, paste the image, read the response, and switch back to apply the fix. We remove that switching: capture on any monitor and LazyScreenshots auto-pastes the image into your AI assistant without file management, window switching, or dragging between displays.
