# How to Take a Clean Screenshot on Mac

We show how to remove desktop icons, the Dock, notifications, menu-bar clutter, busy wallpaper, and unnecessary windows before taking a professional screenshot. Every method includes a way to restore the original setup.

## Hide all desktop icons

In Terminal, run:

```bash
defaults write com.apple.finder CreateDesktop false
killall Finder
```

Finder restarts with a blank desktop. Files remain in `~/Desktop`; nothing is deleted. Restore the icons with:

```bash
defaults write com.apple.finder CreateDesktop true
killall Finder
```

### Alternative: Stage Manager

On macOS Ventura and later, enable **Control Center > Stage Manager** or **System Settings > Desktop & Dock > Stage Manager**. Stage Manager clears the desktop and moves open windows into a side strip. That strip may still appear in full-screen captures.

## Hide the Dock

- Press **Cmd+Option+D** to toggle Dock auto-hide.
- Move the cursor away from the Dock edge before capturing.
- Press **Cmd+Option+D** again afterward to restore the Dock’s permanent display.

You can also use **System Settings > Desktop & Dock > Automatically hide and show the Dock**.

## Silence notifications with Focus

macOS Focus modes, including Do Not Disturb, block visual notification banners.

### Quick toggle

- Hold **Option** and click the clock/date in the menu bar.
- Or open **Control Center > Focus > Do Not Disturb**.

### Scheduled Focus

For recurring documentation or content sessions, create a custom Focus at **System Settings > Focus**. A mode such as “Screenshot Mode” can silence notifications and hide Dock badges. Turn it off afterward or configure it to expire after one hour.

## Clean up the menu bar

### Auto-hide the entire menu bar

At **System Settings > Desktop & Dock**, set **Automatically hide and show the menu bar** to **Always** or **In Full Screen Only**. With **Always**, the menu bar appears only when the cursor reaches the top of the screen.

### Remove system icons

Hold **Cmd** and drag system icons such as Wi‑Fi, Bluetooth, or Sound off the menu bar. This does not remove third-party app icons.

### Hide third-party icons

- Quit the app by right-clicking its icon and choosing **Quit**, or press **Cmd+Q** when it is focused.
- Check the app’s preferences for a **Hide menu bar icon** setting.
- Use a menu-bar manager such as Bartender or Ice to place items behind a collapsible section.

## Set a clean wallpaper

1. Open **System Settings > Wallpaper**.
2. Scroll to **Colors**.
3. Choose a solid color such as dark gray, white, or a brand color.

Built-in Dynamic Desktop wallpapers are another clean option. Restore your regular wallpaper from the same settings panel after the session.

## Close or minimize unnecessary windows

- **Cmd+H** hides the current app while leaving it running.
- **Cmd+Option+H** hides every app except the current one.
- **Cmd+M** minimizes the current window to the Dock.

**Cmd+Option+H** is the quickest way to leave only the app being captured visible.

## One-command clean screenshot scripts

Create `clean-screenshot.sh`:

Create the matching `restore-screenshot.sh`:

Make both scripts executable:

Run the first script before capturing and the restore script afterward.

## Skip cleanup with a clean-background screenshot tool

Before **Cmd+Shift+3**, **Cmd+Shift+4**, or **Cmd+Shift+5**, check:

1. Desktop icons are hidden with Terminal or Stage Manager.
2. The Dock is auto-hidden with **Cmd+Option+D**.
3. Do Not Disturb is enabled.
4. The menu bar is hidden or third-party icons are removed.
5. Wallpaper is a solid color or clean gradient.
6. Other windows are hidden with **Cmd+Option+H**.
7. Irrelevant browser tabs are closed or pinned.
8. Personal information, bookmarks, and email previews are not visible.
