# How to Use Visual Intelligence to Search and Identify Screenshots on Mac and iPhone

**May 19, 2026 · LazyScreenshots Team**

Visual Intelligence is Apple’s AI image-analysis feature for identifying products, extracting and translating text, recognizing landmarks, identifying plants and animals, summarizing content, answering questions, and taking actions from screenshots. It understands UI layouts, code, errors, forms, and other text-heavy captures in addition to recognizable objects.

## Requirements

| Requirement | Details |
| --- | --- |
| Mac | Apple Silicon (M1 or later), macOS Tahoe (macOS 26) |
| iPhone | iPhone 16 or later, iOS 26 |
| iPad | M1 chip or later, iPadOS 26 |
| Apple Intelligence | Enabled under **System Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri** |
| Language | English, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, or Spanish |

## Use Visual Intelligence on Mac

### Quick Look

1. Select a screenshot in Finder.
2. Press **Space**.
3. Click the **Visual Intelligence** sparkle button.
4. Review identified objects, extracted text, and suggested actions.

### Finder context menu

1. Right-click a screenshot.
2. Hover over **Quick Actions**.
3. Choose **Look Up** or **Ask About This Image**.
4. Review the analysis and suggested actions.

### Photos

1. Open the screenshot in Photos.
2. Click **Info**.
3. Review automatically displayed objects, text, and context-aware suggestions.
4. Select an identified item for more details or actions.

We can annotate and beautify screenshots before analysis with [LazyScreenshots](https://www.lazyscreenshots.com/), adding context that Visual Intelligence cannot.

## Use Visual Intelligence on iPhone

- **Camera Control:** On iPhone 16 or later, press and hold Camera Control. This also works while viewing a screenshot in Photos or another image viewer.
- **Photos:** Open the screenshot, tap **Info**, and select an identified item for details, web search, or an action.
- **Screenshot preview:** Tap the floating thumbnail after capture, then tap **Visual Intelligence** in Markup before saving or sharing.

## What it can identify

| Content type | What Visual Intelligence does | Example use case |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Products | Identifies products and finds where to buy them | A product screenshot can lead to Amazon or the manufacturer’s site |
| Text (any language) | Extracts, copies, translates, and searches text | Extract an error message for a search or issue tracker |
| Plants and animals | Identifies species and provides information | Identify a plant and find care instructions |
| Landmarks and places | Identifies locations and provides directions and details | Identify a landmark and open Maps |
| Food and recipes | Identifies dishes and suggests recipes | Find similar recipes from a meal screenshot |
| Code and technical content | Extracts and explains code, errors, and logs | Extract and explain a stack trace |
| UI elements | Understands layouts and identifies components | Explain options in a settings panel |

## Practical workflows

### Explain an error

1. Capture the error dialog, crash log, or terminal output.
2. Open it with Visual Intelligence.
3. Review extracted text, meaning, common causes, and suggested fixes.
4. For deeper analysis, tap **Ask ChatGPT**.

This is useful when text cannot otherwise be selected.

### Analyze a UI component

Capture a UI pattern and ask Visual Intelligence to identify components such as navigation bars, tabs, cards, and modals.

### Extract structured data

From tables, spreadsheets, invoices, or receipts, Visual Intelligence can:

- Copy all text.
- Copy individual values or rows.
- Create a calendar event from a date.
- Add a phone number or email to Contacts.
- Open a URL shown in the image.

### Translate screenshots

It can detect and translate content such as Japanese errors, German settings, or Spanish notifications while considering the surrounding interface context.

## Visual Intelligence versus Live Text versus Visual Look Up

| Feature | What it does | Available since | Requires Apple Intelligence |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Live Text | Selects and copies text in images | macOS Monterey / iOS 15 | No |
| Visual Look Up | Identifies plants, animals, and landmarks in photos | macOS Monterey / iOS 15 | No |
| Visual Intelligence | Image understanding with actions, questions, and AI analysis | macOS Tahoe / iOS 26 | Yes |

Visual Intelligence includes the capabilities of Live Text and Visual Look Up plus contextual questions, suggestions, and actions.

## ChatGPT integration

From the Visual Intelligence panel, tap **Ask ChatGPT** and ask questions such as:

- “What does this error mean and how do I fix it?”
- “Recreate this UI layout in SwiftUI.”
- “Summarize this document screenshot.”
- “What font is used in this design?”

The integration sends the screenshot and question to OpenAI’s servers. A first-use confirmation appears. Enable or disable it under **System Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri > ChatGPT**.

## Privacy and processing

- **On-device by default:** Object identification, text extraction, and basic Look Up run locally on the Apple Neural Engine.
- **Private Cloud Compute:** More complex queries use Apple servers, which process requests without storing them or making them accessible to Apple.
- **ChatGPT is opt-in:** Sending screenshots requires permission each time or a one-time opt-in and is subject to OpenAI’s privacy policy.
- **No training on interactions:** Apple states that Apple and OpenAI do not use Visual Intelligence interactions to train AI models.

For screenshots containing API keys, credentials, or internal dashboards, ChatGPT sends the image to external servers. Use on-device features and Private Cloud Compute for confidential captures.

## Improve results

- Crop to the relevant content before analysis.
- Use area capture, **Cmd+Shift+4**, for an error dialog, product image, or code block.
- Use Retina-resolution screenshots and avoid already-compressed images.
- Ask specific ChatGPT questions, such as “What CSS property creates this gradient effect?”
- Annotate with LazyScreenshots first to highlight the area to analyze.
