# How to Find & Reuse Your Screenshot History on Mac

We help you browse, search, and re-paste recent captures without digging through Finder.

## The screenshot graveyard problem

Desktop screenshots commonly have timestamped names such as `Screenshot 2026-03-22 at 14.32.01.png`. Common problems include:

- **Desktop clutter:** macOS saves screenshots to the Desktop by default; after a week of debugging, there may be 50+ files mixed with other documents.
- **Clipboard overwrite:** each new clipboard capture replaces the previous one.
- **No visual browse:** timestamped names do not show the image contents.
- **No re-paste:** finding an old image normally requires opening it, copying it, switching apps, and pasting.

## Finding screenshots in Finder

### Search by name

1. Open Finder with **Cmd+N**.
2. Go to the Desktop or screenshot location.
3. Press **Cmd+F**.
4. Type `Screenshot`.
5. Sort by **Date Modified**.

### Use Spotlight

Press **Cmd+Space**, type `Screenshot`, and review recent files. Spotlight is faster but does not show previews.

### Gallery View

In Finder, press **Cmd+4** for large previews. This is the best built-in visual browsing option, but it still requires navigating to the correct folder.

## macOS Recents and Smart Folders

Finder’s Recents view includes screenshots but mixes them with all other recently opened files.

### Create a Smart Folder for screenshots

1. In Finder, choose **File > New Smart Folder**.
2. Click **+** to add a rule.
3. Set **Name contains “Screenshot”**.
4. Add **Kind is Image**.
5. Click **Save** and name it **All Screenshots**.

This creates a persistent search, but re-sharing still requires opening Finder, locating and opening the file, copying it, and pasting it.
