These images can expose information that should remain private. Common examples include: - **API keys and tokens:** A terminal screenshot containing `export API_KEY=sk-...` exposes a credential as soon as the image leaves your Mac. - **Email addresses:** Customer emails may appear in administration panels, logs, or database views. - **Passwords and secrets:** Environment variables, `.env` files, or configuration panels may display database passwords. - **Personal data:** Names, phone numbers, addresses, and financial information may be visible in an interface you are debugging. - **Internal URLs:** Staging addresses, internal tools, and administration paths can reveal infrastructure details. Pixelation makes selected information unreadable while preserving the surrounding screenshot and its context. This matters particularly when you paste images into AI tools, where screenshots may be processed by external servers. ## macOS has no built-in blur macOS Preview provides markup tools for shapes, text, and signatures, but it does not provide a pixelation or blur tool. Built-in Mac tools therefore do not provide a direct way to redact screenshot information. ### Workarounds with Preview These Preview workarounds have important drawbacks: - **✗ Drawing a filled rectangle over text:** It works, but looks unprofessional, makes the concealment obvious, and removes context. Viewers cannot tell whether the hidden area contained three characters or thirty. - **✗ Scribbling with the Sketch tool:** Coverage and line thickness may be insufficient, leaving some underlying text readable. - **✗ Cropping out the sensitive area:** Cropping can remove context needed to understand the screenshot. For example, an API key beside an error message may be adjacent to the very error you need to share. These methods do not provide the quality or speed of proper pixelation. ## Third-party options ### Photoshop or GIMP Both applications support pixelation filters: - **Photoshop:** Select the area, then choose **Filter > Pixelate > Mosaic**. - **GIMP:** Select the area, then choose **Filters > Blur > Pixelize**. They work well, but require opening a heavyweight image editor for a task that can take only a few seconds. ### CleanShot X CleanShot X includes a blur tool in its annotation editor. Capture the image, open the editor, select blur, and drag over the sensitive area. It works reliably but adds steps compared with an integrated capture workflow. ### Shottr Shottr provides a lightweight blur/redact tool. It is fast, but it does not integrate with AI auto-paste workflows. ### Online tools Online image-blur services require uploading screenshots to a third-party website. For screenshots containing sensitive data, uploading the original image undermines the purpose of redaction.
