# How to Take a Screenshot on Mac

Every built-in Mac screenshot shortcut, where captures save, and how we upgrade the workflow for AI coding.

## Why screenshots matter for developers

Screenshots let you communicate visual context to AI tools. A capture can show a UI bug, design comp, terminal error, layout, color, spacing, error messages, and current state without requiring a long text description. The faster you capture and deliver that context, the faster you can work.

## Built-in Mac screenshot shortcuts

macOS includes these screenshot shortcuts without requiring an additional app or configuration.

| Shortcut | Capture type | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| `⌘ ⇧ 3` | Full screen capture | Captures your entire screen, or all screens when multiple displays are connected. The capture saves as a PNG on the Desktop. macOS plays a camera-shutter sound and shows a thumbnail preview in the bottom-right corner. |
| `⌘ ⇧ 4` | Selection capture | Changes the cursor to a crosshair. Click and drag to select an area, then release to capture it. Hold `Space` while dragging to reposition the selection, or hold `Shift` to lock one axis. |
| `⌘ ⇧ 4`, then `Space` | Window capture | After pressing `Cmd+Shift+4`, press `Space` to turn the cursor into a camera. Hover over a window and click to capture it with a drop shadow. Hold `Option` while clicking to capture it without the shadow. |
| `⌘ ⇧ 5` | Screenshot toolbar | Opens the macOS Screenshot toolbar. Choose full-screen, window, or selection capture; record the full screen or a selection; set a 5-second or 10-second timer; and change the save location. |

## Where screenshots save on Mac

By default, screenshots save to the **Desktop** as PNG files named:

```text
Screenshot [date] at [time].png
```

### Change the save location

1. Press **Cmd+Shift+5** to open the Screenshot toolbar.
2. Click **Options**.
3. Under **Save to**, choose **Desktop**, **Documents**, **Clipboard**, **Mail**, **Messages**, **Preview**, or **Other Location** for a custom folder.

When you choose **Clipboard**, the capture goes to the clipboard instead of being saved as a file. You can paste it with `Cmd+V`; copying something else replaces it.

### Copy a capture to the clipboard with a shortcut

Add `Ctrl` to any screenshot shortcut to copy the capture to the clipboard instead of saving it to disk. For example:

```text
Cmd+Ctrl+Shift+3
```

This copies a full-screen capture to the clipboard.

## Common problems with built-in screenshots

The built-in tools work well for basic captures, but frequent screenshot users may encounter these limitations:

- **Desktop clutter:** Screenshots land on the Desktop by default, which can leave many files such as `Screenshot 2026-03-22` across the Desktop after debugging.
- **No annotations:** Built-in captures do not provide arrows, boxes, or text. To annotate, you must open Preview or another app, annotate the image, save it, and then share it.
- **Manual AI-tool pasting:** The workflow requires taking a screenshot, switching to Claude or Cursor, clicking the text field, pressing `Cmd+V`, and waiting—a four-step process with a context switch.
- **No history:** If you do not save a capture or overwrite it by copying something else, there is no gallery or timeline from which to retrieve it.

## The upgrade: LazyScreenshots

LazyScreenshots is our Mac screenshot tool for developers who code with AI. It retains the familiar macOS screenshot workflow while reducing the friction of capturing, editing, pasting, and finding screenshots.

### One keystroke: auto-paste to AI

Press `Cmd+Shift+2` to capture a selection and auto-paste it directly into Claude, Cursor, or ChatGPT. You do not need to switch apps, press `Cmd+V`, or click the text field; the screenshot appears in the AI conversation instantly.

Included capabilities:

- **Auto-paste:** Send captures to Claude, Cursor, Windsurf, ChatGPT, and more.
- **Annotations:** Add arrows, boxes, text, blur, and highlights.
- **Burst mode:** Take rapid-fire screenshots with a live HUD counter.
- **Color dropper:** Grab any color from the screen.
- **AI editing:** Remove backgrounds and edit images with AI.
- **Screenshot history:** Scroll through every capture; the history is searchable.
